The 2023 Ryder Cup is lower than a month away, and Team Europe’s 12-man roster is now midway solidified, with the ultimate two automatic spots locking in after the Omega European Masters.
Heading into the match, 4 of the six automatic qualifying spots had already been claimed: Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm from the European Points List, and Viktor Hovland and Tyrrell Hatton from the World Points listing.
With a T3 end in Switzerland, Matt Fitzpatrick leapfrogged Tommy Fleetwood to assert the ultimate spot on the World Points List. On the European Points facet, Robert MacIntyre held on to the ultimate spot regardless of ending T55.
That leaves European captain Luke Donald with some powerful choices to make on Monday, particularly given younger Swede Ludvig Aberg’s spectacular play over the past two weeks, with a T4 on the Czech Masters and his maiden victory, fueled by a late birdie barrage, in Switzerland on Sunday.
The U.S. workforce’s six automatic qualifiers, Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa and Xander Schauffele had been set on the conclusion of the BMW Championship. On Tuesday final week, U.S. captain Zach Johnson introduced his six captain’s picks: Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Sam Burns, Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler.
The Ryder Cup begins in Rome on September 29.
