Colombian Nairo Quintana has been retrospectively disqualified from this 12 months’s Tour de France after testing constructive for tramadol, the International Cycling Union (UCI) introduced on Wednesday.

Former two-time runner-up Quintana, 32, completed sixth general within the race which ended on July 24.

“The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announces that the Colombian rider Nairo Alexander Quintana Rojas has been sanctioned for an infringement of the in-competition ban on using tramadol as set out in the UCI Medical Rules with the aim of protecting the safety and health of riders in light of the side-effects of this substance,” the physique mentioned.
“The analyses of two dried blood samples supplied by the rider on 8 and 13 July in the course of the 2022 Tour de France revealed the presence of tramadol and its two most important metabolites.

On Tuesday, Quintana’s Arkea-Samsic staff introduced he had signed a contract extension till 2025 and has been included of their squad for the Vuelta a Espana which begins on Friday.
“I consider the Team Arkea-Samsic to be a family in which I feel at home,” Quintana mentioned.
