“More than the work within the legs, I feel it’s within the thoughts. How you deal with your thoughts and the way you wish to play the sport is extra necessary. If you retain considering, ‘Oh, I’ve not performed loads of Test matches, I’ve not performed too many first-class video games’, it’s not going to assist. When you get a possibility, clearly you need to be grateful and come out and do the job for the staff.

“Prasidh has been with the Indian staff. Not across the Test staff, however he has performed loads of white-ball cricket for us within the final two or three years, and he has proven that he has bought loads of potential. Obviously, it didn’t work out nicely for him taking part in his first sport, however all of us had been nervous after we performed our first sport. He would have been nervous as nicely.

“These things happen, but the guy definitely has the game to excel in this particular format. So we are going to back him because he definitely has the potential and he has got a great attitude as well about his game, which probably will hold us in good stead moving forward.”

Pitch battle after India flop

The skipper alluded to pitch video games performed by their hosts.

“We have been playing practice matches for the last five-six years,” he stated. “We have even tried first-class matches, however we don’t get these type of wickets in follow matches. It’s higher we put together on our personal, make the pitch we wish. When we final went to Australia, after we got here to South Africa in 2018, the ball didn’t bounce above the knee on these pitches. In the Test, it flies above the pinnacle.

“Keeping these items in thoughts, we determined we’d put together in our personal approach. If you get the situations in follow matches that you just get in [Test] matches, then it’s a totally different matter. But we’ve seen on the final three-four excursions that we don’t get these situations in follow matches. Even the bowlers bowl 120-125kph. We have skilled that within the final two-three follow matches that we’ve performed on away excursions.

“That’s why it’s higher we play our personal bowlers, and make the pitch the way in which we wish it.

“Bumrah bowled well,” Rohit stated. “We all know his quality. All he wanted was a bit of support from the other side, which he didn’t get. To be honest, that happens [once in a while]. All the other three bowlers, they were trying really hard, bending their back, but it just didn’t work out. Didn’t happen the way we would have wanted to. But again, games like this teach you a lot of things, what you need to do as a group, as a bowling group. Hopefully, they can understand what went wrong, and then try and come back a little stronger from this game.”
