Ireland’s top rally driver killed in accident while testing

33-year-old Hyundai driver Craig Breen died while conducting pre-trial testing forward of this weekend’s Croatia Rally.

Irish World Rally Championship (WRC) driver Craig Breen was confirmed lifeless on Thursday, 13 April by the Hyundai Motorsport staff, the BBC reported.

CRAIG BREEN HAD FINISHED SECOND SIX TIMES IN HIS WRC CAREER

He was driving a Hyundai i20 N Rally with co-driver James Fulton, who was unhurt in the crash. Breen’s Hyundai left the street after the driver swerved on a street between Stari Golubovec and Lobor. The incident came about noon native time.

Breen moved again to Hyundai Motorsport on the finish of 2022 after a stint at M-Sport. He made his WRC debut in 2016 for the Abu Dhabi World Rally staff, Deutsche Welle reported.

His father, Ray Breen, is a former Irish Rally champion.

Craig’s achievements in the game embody: 2009 International, British and Irish Fiesta Sporting Trophy titles that yr and he was topped Ireland’s Young Driver of the yr,

MESSAGES FROM RIVAL TEAMS AND THE WORLD MOTORSPORT’S GOVERNING BODY WERE SENT ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Messages from throughout motorsport, together with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who mentioned: “On behalf of the FIA, I extend sincere condolences to the family & friends of Craig following his passing during a private testing accident. Our thoughts & prayers are with his loved ones & the Rally community at this difficult time.”

Jari-Matti Latvala, staff principal of Toyota Gazoo Racing WRC mentioned: “We are shocked and saddened by the loss of Craig Breen. We would like to offer our deepest condolences to his family and to all at Hyundai Motorsport, on behalf of everybody at TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team.”

Skoda Motorsport mentioned: “Very sad news about Craig Breen. We are deeply saddened to learn that an amazing member of the rally family has passed away doing what we all love. Craig, you will be missed. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, his friends and his many fans.”
