‘It was a strange one’ – Russell on Merc’s lack of pace in Brazil

Mercedes driver George Russell says he was stunned by the group’s lack of pace through the Sao Paulo Sprint on Saturday.

The 25-year-old completed fourth and regardless of a good begin to the dash.

Russell made a sensible begin by squeezing previous Sergio Perez in the opening exchanges, earlier than transferring as much as second on the following lap, when he dived down the within of Lando Norris at Turn 10.

After the 24 lap Sprint, Russell mentioned overheating tyres was the explanation why the automotive was sluggish.

“Yeah, just about. [Hamilton and I] have been dropping again at a comparable price.

“I was quite happy with my management but the pace of Red Bull and Lando just really caught us by the surprise. [It’s] challenging to understand these tyres. It was a strange one,” mentioned Russell.

“But the situations are three or 4 levels colder tomorrow, and imagine it or not, that has a huge affect on the automobiles and the tyres – primarily the tyres, you might be working at a completely totally different window.

“I hope things will come towards us; I’m not going to put all my eggs in that basket. We need to work to understand how we got it wrong today. It’s very unforeseen.”
