Proudly SA: Ernie Els wins first major on Seniors Tour

South African golf legend Ernie Els won his first major on the senior golf tour on Sunday.

Els, who will flip 55 in October, triumphed on the Kaulig Companies Championship at Firestone Country Club’s South Course in Akron, Ohio, when he shot a closing spherical of two-under-par 68 to complete on 10-under 270 for the match.

That was ok for a one-shot win over South Korea’s Y.E. Yang.

Ernie Els is a four-time major winner on the PGA Tour

Els has now received six occasions on the over-50 PGA Tour Champions.

On the common PGA Tour, Els received 19 titles, together with two US Opens and two Open Championships.

“This has been a long time coming on this golf course,” Els advised the PGA Tour Champions website.

“Thirty-two years ago, I started playing here… but I never got to win here. So, this was really great.”

By successful the Kaulig Companies title, previously known as the Senior Players, Els certified for subsequent March’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. It might be his twenty fifth look on the match.

As a former winner, Els may also be within the subject at this week’s 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.
