Springboks goal-kicking is a major problem says Jake White

Bulls Director of Rugby and World Cup-winning coach Jake White feels that the Springboks’ goal-kicking issues are a major impediment.

White feels that having a world-class goal-kicker within the beginning XV is non-negotiable for a Test aspect.

Springboks kicking considerations Jake White

White factors out that the Springboks paid the value for not having a world-class goal-kicker towards Ireland.

In his column for Rugby365, White wrote: “One of the primary belongings you study on teaching programs is that there are particular stipulations you want in a profitable workforce.

“One, you want a captain. Two, you want a goal-kicker and three you want a strong set-piece. Whereas different developments come and go, these fundamentals have by no means modified.

“Looking from the surface in, if you happen to don’t go into a Test match with a Test-standard purpose kicker, you’re usually going to lose. Any teaching handbook will inform you that you just want these nuts and bolts, like a tighthead that may lock down the scrum, or a respectable set of locks.

“For that purpose, I used to be stunned that Ireland didn’t win by extra.

“That’s what everybody feels in South Africa, and I really feel the identical. Why?

“Because the Boks didn’t play particularly well, but most importantly, they didn’t have a goal-kicker, which probably put us at a five-point handicap anyway. As it turned out, we lost by three.”

Willemse clearly not the man

White dismissed Springboks supremo Jacques Nienaber’s reasoning on giving Damian Willemse the kicking accountability.

Willemse’s goal-kicking has by no means been a robust level and White feels that the transfer was simply a gamble and never a calculated transfer designed for participant improvement.

“I noticed earlier this week Jacques Nienaber defending the actual fact Damian Willemse was kicking on Saturday evening.

“He defined that the one manner you enhance is by kicking in entrance of huge crowds, however I don’t perceive that logic as a result of Willemse was demoted as a front-line goal-kicker by the Stormers for Manie Libbok as a result of he wasn’t sticking the ball via the uprights often sufficient, in order that rationale doesn’t actually wash.

“The actuality is he wasn’t kicking at provincial stage after which they thrust him into a Test match as the primary kicker, so obtained what they deserved.

“There’s no use dodging the bullet; Jonny Wilkinson won England the World Cup, Percy Montgomery won South Africa the World Cup, Dan Carter won the All Blacks the World Cup because they were brilliant kickers. Hindsight doesn’t win you Test matches and they missed a trick.”
