PINEHURST, N.C. — A U.S. Open champion might be topped later immediately on Pinehurst No. 2, however the one query remaining is who that may be.

Bryson DeChambeau heads into the ultimate spherical seven underneath and main Rory McIlroy, Matthieu Pavon and Patrick Cantlay by three, with Hideki Matsuyama and Ludvig Aberg each 5 again.

DeChambeau already has one U.S. Open title, which he gained at Winged Foot in 2020. McIlroy is in search of his fifth main championship and second U.S. Open victory, though he hasn’t gained a significant because the 2014 PGA Championship.

Matsuyama gained the 2021 Masters, however Pavon, Cantlay and Aberg are all in quest of their first main title.

Whoever wins Sunday evening will take house a document payday. The USGA introduced this U.S. Open will provide a $21.5 million purse with $4.3 million going to the winner — the biggest ever first-place examine awarded at a significant. The top-four finishers all win at the least 1,000,000 {dollars}, with the runner-up receiving $2.322 million.

Xander Schauffele gained $3.33 million on the PGA Championship final month, and Scottie Scheffler gained $3.6 million on the Masters in April.
