U23 Paris-Roubaix winner Tijl De Decker dies following collision with car

First-year skilled bicycle owner Tijl De Decker, winner of the U23 Paris-Roubaix in May, died on the age of twenty-two following a coaching accident, his crew Lotto-Dstny introduced.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Tijl De Decker, following his training accident on Wednesday,” the crew wrote on social media. “The team is heartbroken by this news.”

De Decker collided with the rear of a car throughout a coaching journey. He was taken to hospital in Antwerp the place he underwent surgical procedure. Later he was positioned in an induced coma.

He had signed an expert contract with Lotto-Dstny initially of July.

“We were convinced of Tijl’s potential,” mentioned the Belgian crew’s French supervisor Stephane Heulot.

“His move to the pros was a logical evolution. Unfortunately, we’ll never get there. We’ll remember Tijl as a warm and gentle boy.”

In August 2019, one other younger Belgian with the Lotto crew, Bjorg Lambrecht, died after falling and hitting a concrete construction on the Tour of Poland.

Swiss rider Gino Mader, of Bahrain Victorious, died in June after a crash on a mountain descent within the Tour de Suisse.
