Verstappen hit with grid penalty for the Belgian Grand Prix

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen will obtain a five-place grid penalty for the Belgian Grand Prix after Red Bull determined to put in a brand new gearbox into his RB19 forward of the opening follow session at Spa.

Over the course of the 2023 F1 season, drivers should get round with an allocation of 4 gearbox cassettes and internals. These items construct up the ‘pool’ that may be swapped round throughout the season.

When a driver exceeds his allocation of both of the gearbox elements, he receives a five-place grid penalty for every new element.

Despite rising as the championship runaway chief early in the present season, Verstappen has had reliability points with his gearbox and has already added all his permitted gearbox cassettes and internals into his pool.

It has now emerged that Verstappen will exceed his allowance at this weekend’s Spa F1 race, which means that he will likely be hit with a five-place grid drop for Sunday’s F1 Belgian Grand Prix.

However, it won’t be a brand new scenario for the double world champion as he began final 12 months’s Belgian Grand Prix from the 14th spot on the grid after exceeding his quota of energy unit components. Displaying an eye catching efficiency benefit from his rivals, Verstappen managed to climb up the area and lead the race by lap 12 and went on to win the Belgian F1 race.
