Vingegaard consolidates Dauphine lead with another stage win

Jonas Vingegaard gained the seventh and penultimate stage of the Criterium du Dauphine to consolidate his general lead on Saturday.

The reigning Tour de France champion pulled clear 5 kilometres out to cross the summit end line 41 seconds away from Adam Yates with Jai Hindley again in third.

Vingegaard goes into Sunday’s closing stage to Grenoble with a lead of over two minutes within the common classification.

Vingegaard, who additionally gained Thursday’s fifth stage, has proved he’s approaching his defence of the Tour de France in good condition after mastering Saturday’s stage that includes three massive climbs.

“I feel great, I wanted this stage win,” stated the Dane. “My teammates did a great job throughout the day.”

Sunday’s eighth stage is another powerful affair, with six climbs throughout the 153km experience.

“We’ll see how I feel, I think I’ll approach it riding more cautiously,” stated Vingegaard.

Looking forward to the Tour de France he added: “I don’t think I’m yet at my peak, I’ve still got some work to do.”
